Today marks 10 days since we all met and it feels like we’ve known each other forever! Our group is so close already I don’t know if you could ever have a group as close and amazing as this one. Everyone is so open and chill and just amazing, I wouldn’t change any of them for the world! We began our day with a 6km walk where we encountered different locals with their herds of cows, wheels, and lambs, as well as a group of young kids on their way to school! They were ecstatic to see us and the moment they saw us they came running towards us giving us huge hugs and high fives. After our walk we worked on our first Reflective Field Assignment (RFA) which was where we had to write an “I am from…” poem that described our town. From there we enjoyed lunch then listened to Ann who was probably the most incredible speaker I have ever had the privilege of listening to. Ann is a local woman who works with 5 different groups that all deal with micro-finance and supporting each other. Ann talked mostly about her Young Mother’s Group. From the moment Ann mentioned this group, it was clear how passionate she was about these ladies. The group is made up of 40 members between ages 19 and 24 who are all mothers. Every member gives 20 Ksh a day ( about 20 cents). This totals 800 Ksh a day ($8.00). This money is pooled together to help out the moms that need it most that day or that week whether it is to buy food, cover school fees, or help out with medical costs. Ann went on and on and on about how much this project has helped out these women and it got pretty emotional as she explained how much it has helped her as well. Hearing Ann talk about everything she did left us all speechless and teary eyed at the end of her y’all. We could’ve listened to her for hours if we had the chance. After ann left we had time to hang out so I took a shower ( what a novelty!!!) and then went on a walk with Daniella. Super was ready around 8:00 so we had our chow circle and the went straight into supper where we enjoyed the pasta and salad that the cook crew prepared. After dinner we had evening circle where we shared all of our “I am from…” poems. It was so incredible to hear the talent and perspectives and creativity everyone used, and the humour Paul incorporated too…. let’s just say it was an interesting poem! It was now super late so we decided to call it a night.
